Can Turkey Really Work as a Short Break Destination when you don’t live near a major airport?
Four nights. Guaranteed June sunshine. Somewhere interesting that feels like a proper holiday rather than just a long weekend with better weather.
Finding a destination that ticks all those boxes from the South West takes more research than you might imagine—especially when you are balancing your own travel style with a client’s – even when it’s a friend’s non-negotiable requirements for luxury, separate rooms, and total relaxation.
Starting with the Airport, Not the Destination
Living in Cornwall changes how you approach short breaks. Cornwall Airport Newquay is just 35 minutes from my home, but for guaranteed June heat, the only routes for sun were Faro, Málaga, or Alicante. Neither of us wanted Spain or Portugal this time.
Exeter Airport was our next best choice at 90 minutes away. While Bristol Airport offers wider flight selections, added road travel and navigating a larger terminal quickly eats into a short four-night itinerary.
So, the search began with one core question: Where could we fly directly from Exeter that would feel distinctively different without requiring hours of onward transfers?

That research led directly to TUI’s seasonal direct flight from Exeter to Dalaman, Turkey.
Why I chose Turkey and then Dalyan
Looking at options reachable from Dalaman Airport, Dalyan immediately stood out. Located roughly 30 minutes away by private transfer, it sits within the Köyceğiz-Dalyan Special Environmental Protection Area.
Within a compact area, Dalyan packs in incredible geographical and cultural variety:
- The Dalyan Waterways: A tranquil delta connecting freshwater Lake Köyceğiz to the Mediterranean Sea.
- Ancient Lycian Rock Tombs: Dramatic 4th-century BC tombs carved directly into the sheer river cliffs.
- İztuzu Beach (Turtle Beach) A protected 4.5km sandbar famous as a key nesting ground for Caretta caretta (loggerhead turtles).
- Natural Thermal Springs: Sulphur-rich mud baths and thermal pools near Lake Köyceğiz.
It offered enough variety to keep every day feeling fresh without forcing us into a rushed daily schedule.
And with luck we’d see turtles.
That was the point at which Dalyan stopped looking like somewhere we could go and started looking like somewhere worth going.
Exploring Dalyan: A Riverside Town Built for Slow Travel
Arriving late on Thursday evening, Friday morning was our first introduction to Dalyan. After breakfast, we walked into town, browsed boutique shops for traditional woven Turkish cotton towels, and enjoyed lunch along the riverbank.
Our waiter threw bread into the river in an attempt to summon the turtles. Scores of fish appeared but no turtles.
Ancient Views and Waterway Dynamics
The river creates a constant backdrop of activity. Boats glide past, fish dart beneath the waterfront tables, and a gentle breeze off the water keeps the June heat comfortable. Directly across the river, the ancient Lycian rock-cut tombs of Kaunos loom over the landscape. They are illuminated at night like a dramatic theatrical backdrop.
Boat Taxis to İztuzu Beach
On Saturday afternoon, we took the local public boat taxi to İztuzu Beach. The 30-minute journey through winding reed beds and delta channels was wonderfully cooling, leading to three hours of swimming in the clear Mediterranean waters.
Thermal Mud Baths
On Sunday morning, we hired a boat upriver toward Lake Köyceğiz and the thermal mud baths. The strong sulphurous “rotten egg” smell was an unexpected shock—turning a relaxing mud spa into a hilarious test of our senses! A fresh swim in Lake Köyceğiz was a very welcome reset.
Unscripted Wildlife Moments
Afterward, we skipped the crowds and asked our boat driver to drop us off at a quiet restaurant on the opposite bank. Sitting quietly by the river with a cold drink, we experienced our favourite moment of the trip: a wild soft-shelled turtle (Trionyx triunguis) swam right up to us, accompanied by small freshwater terrapins.

Accommodation Review: Dalyan Resort Spa
For this trip, we stayed at Dalyan Resort Spa, a boutique-style property surrounded by gardens along the riverfront (sharing grounds with its sister property, Dalyan Resort).
Key Highlights:
- Facilities: Two large outdoor swimming pools, an onsite restaurant/bar, and generous daily breakfast buffets.
- Atmosphere: Extremely peaceful riverside setting with uninterrupted views across the water.
- Location Trade-Off: While quiet and scenic, the walk into Dalyan town center can feel long in the peak June heat. Taxis or local river transfers easily bridge the gap.
Essential Travel Logistics: Planning the Journey Home
I’d put considerable thought into getting there. While the outward journey was seamless the journey home taught a valuable lesson in trip planning.
Exeter was manageable from Cornwall, the flight was direct, and I’d arranged a private transfer so we were at our hotel about 30 minutes after leaving Dalaman Airport.
I also travelled light with just a 10kg cabin case and small rucksack which meant no luggage carousel for me. I’ve written separately about why I prefer travelling with hand luggage only.
Our return flight landed back at Exeter Airport just before midnight. Factoring in luggage collection for my travel companion and walking to the car, it was nearly 1:00 AM before we hit the road for the 90-minute drive back to Cornwall.
It taught me something I now consider when looking at flights for clients:
Don’t just ask what time the flight is scheduled to land. Ask what happens if it’s two hours late.

Always evaluate return flight timings for late arrival contingencies.
Ask yourself:
Is booking an overnight airport hotel worth the extra peace of mind?
If the flight is delayed by two hours, will you still be comfortable driving home?
Will onward public transport or trains still be running?
A difficult journey home can take the shine off a wonderfully relaxing holiday.
Final Verdict: Is a 4-Night Turkish Break Worth It?
Dalyan proves that you don’t need a fortnight to enjoy a rich, culturally immersive getaway. It combines the warm climate and luxury of a Mediterranean resort with unique ecosystems, ancient archaeological history, and slow-paced charm.
Whether you want an active short break filled with boat trips and ancient ruins, or simply want to read by a riverside pool while your travel partner relaxes, Dalyan balances diverse travel styles effortlessly.
Most importantly, it answered the question I’d started with.
Could I find somewhere sufficiently interesting to make flying abroad worthwhile for only four nights, while still giving my client the relaxing holiday she wanted?
Yes.
It just took some careful research to find it.
